Grade 12 RAP Visual Art

9 x 12 inches, acrylic.

I had started this project about two years ago, then came across it again recently. It's rare that I actually resume working on such old pieces, but it felt important that I follow through with this one. Especially in today's world, it's more important than ever for people to recognize and identify racism and injustice when they see it. I was first introduced to topics such as racism and extreme police brutality when I listened to 2pac's music in elementary school. It opened my eyes, and it made me begin to understand just how much hate and injustice exists in the world, especially towards members of the black community. To this day, he is still one of my favourite musical artists, and I highly suggest listening to his music and taking a second to just digest and process what he is saying. His lyrics hold such importance and weight to them, which is why I opted to include them in the background of my painting. I want my artwork to reflect the things I believe in, and I believe that no black person should have to suffer the effects of racism, discrimination, or police brutality based on the colour of their skin. Black lives matter, today and always.
